On genuinely oversized trunks, four feet or more, we sometimes split the visible mass with a chainsaw first to give the grinder a manageable bite, which adds time but keeps the job from stalling out. American elm on this scale brings its own complication, a fibrous, interlocked grain that grabs at the cutter wheel rather than shearing cleanly, so even with the bigger machine we plan on a slower, steadier pass rather than pushing hard and risking a stall.
Getting the Machine to a Century-Old Tree
The trouble with a lot of these old oaks is placement, planted decades before anyone thought about equipment access, often close to a foundation or dead center in a small backyard. A standard walk-behind grinder needs about 36 inches of clearance to get through a gate, and on some of the tighter Village lots we've had to bring the machine in narrower, which slows the cut but still gets the job done without tearing out a fence.
