About Old Hickory Stump Grinding Pros

We grind stumps in the Village and the towns around Old Hickory Lake, and we've stayed a one-thing operation on purpose rather than growing into something else.

HomeAbout Old Hickory Stump Grinding Pros

Started with one machine and the Village's oldest yards

This business started small, the way most stump outfits around here do - a used grinder, a trailer, and a willingness to take the jobs the bigger tree companies didn't want to bother scheduling. The Village's yards, full of white oaks and elms planted back when DuPont built the neighborhood for its rayon workers, kept turning up stumps that had been sitting for years because nobody wanted to deal with root systems that old. That became the actual business - not felling trees, just finishing the job properly once someone else's tree, or a storm, had already brought one down.

A hundred years of growth doesn't leave a small stump. Grinding one out right, below grade and clean, takes patience and the right machine, and that's what we built the company around.

Stump work is all we do

We don't climb trees, we don't drop them, and we don't do brush hauling as a standalone service. Full-service tree companies are set up to fell trees and move on, and the stump grind ends up being the last thing on the crew's list - rushed, or scheduled out weeks because it's not the job that pays the bills. Splitting off and doing only the grinding means we're never juggling a stump job against a bigger removal contract; it's the only thing on the schedule, so it gets full attention.

It also means the equipment stays specialized. We're not hauling a bucket truck and a chipper and a grinder all on the same trailer - just what it takes to get a stump out clean.

What a century-old canopy actually means for the work

Old Hickory's tree stock is older than most of the towns around it, and that changes how a job goes. A white oak or American elm that's been in the ground since the Village was built has root systems that spread well past the visible stump, sometimes running under a driveway or brushing a foundation laid in the 1920s. We check for that before we start, not after the machine's already chewed through the first few inches.

Licensed, insured, and easy to find

We carry liability coverage on every job and we're happy to show proof of it before we start work, especially on properties near a historic foundation or a lakefront retaining wall where the stakes of a mistake are higher. If something ever did go wrong, you'd want that answer settled before we ever showed up, not after.
