Why Hardwood Stumps Are Their Own Job
A white oak stump and a soft maple stump are not the same amount of work even at the same diameter. Oak, elm, and black locust are dense grained hardwoods, and dense wood dulls carbide teeth faster and feeds through the wheel slower than anything soft. A grind that would take forty minutes on a similarly sized poplar can run over an hour on a mature oak, and we budget the time accordingly instead of quoting hardwood like every other stump.
Black locust deserves its own mention — it's one of the hardest woods that shows up regularly in Middle Tennessee yards, and a locust stump that's been dead and drying for a year or two can be tougher on equipment than one freshly cut. We check teeth condition mid-job on locust and larger oak stumps and swap or rotate them rather than pushing a dulling wheel through the rest of the grind.
The Wood Old Hickory Grew Up With
White oak and American elm are the backbone species around the original Village lots — many were already established when the DuPont company built the neighborhood in the 1920s, which puts a fair number of these trees past the century mark now. Sugar maple shows up too and grinds a little easier than the true hardwoods, closer to a medium-density job than a heavy one. When a tree this old finally comes down, whether from age, storm, or disease, the stump is almost always larger in diameter than what a younger neighborhood would produce.

How much longer does hardwood take to grind than a softer species?
Expect 30 to 60 percent more time on a similarly sized white oak or black locust compared to a soft maple or poplar. The wheel has to work harder per pass, so we run more passes at a slower feed rate rather than forcing it and burning through teeth.
Does a dead, dried-out hardwood stump grind easier?
Not necessarily. A stump that's been dead a year or more loses moisture but doesn't necessarily lose density — black locust in particular stays tough even fully dried. Rot-softened wood grinds easier, but a solid dead hardwood can be just as demanding as a live one.
Why is black locust singled out from other hardwoods?
It's simply denser than white oak or elm and is known for being hard on equipment generally, not just stump grinders. We treat any locust stump over about 20 inches as a job that needs extra time and a teeth check partway through.
Do you charge more for hardwood stumps than softer species at the same size?
Pricing is based on diameter and difficulty, and a hardwood stump at a given size often does land at the higher end of that size bracket because of the extra time involved. We factor that into the phone quote rather than adding a surprise charge on-site.
