Same neighborhood, five very different woods
Walk a few blocks in the Village and you'll pass white oak, American elm, sugar maple, black locust, and sycamore, often standing on the very same street or even the same lot side by side. They don't grind the same way, and treating them like interchangeable stumps is exactly how a job runs longer than expected or a grinder wheel dulls faster than it should partway through an afternoon. White oak is dense and slow but predictable once the machine's set up - even feed, consistent resistance the whole way down, a job you can estimate fairly accurately by diameter alone once you know the species going in. Black locust is, if anything, harder than oak to get through; it was historically favored for fence posts precisely because it resists rot and holds up under constant stress in the ground for decades on end without giving way, and that same stubborn toughness makes it genuinely hard on grinding teeth and slow going compared to almost anything else we cut in this part of Davidson County.
We've had black locust jobs that took nearly twice as long as a similarly sized white oak stump for exactly this reason, and it's not something you can tell just by looking at the bark from a distance.
American elm's trouble is usually hidden
Many of the Village's original elms were lost decades ago to Dutch elm disease, a fungal infection that swept through American elm populations nationwide starting in the mid-1900s, and the survivors and replacements we grind now can still carry compromised wood even while the tree looked perfectly healthy standing right up until it came down in a storm or was finally removed - decay pockets and soft spots that simply aren't visible from outside until the grinding wheel's already cutting into them. A stump that looks straightforward and solid from the outside can turn out punky and soft in the middle, which actually speeds up that particular section of the grind since there's noticeably less resistance for the wheel to push through, but it makes the overall job genuinely harder to estimate accurately by eye alone before we've even started cutting. We build a little extra flexibility into elm quotes for exactly this reason, since the surface tells you considerably less about what's underneath than it would with a healthier, more uniform species like oak.
Sugar maple and sycamore round out the mix
Sugar maple grinds more like a moderate hardwood overall - not as punishing on equipment as oak or black locust, but still noticeably denser and slower going than a soft maple variety commonly planted in a lot of newer subdivisions built around the county over the past few decades. Sycamore, common along the river and creek bottoms in this part of Davidson County, tends to have a stringy, fibrous grain that can grab at the wheel differently than a straight-grained hardwood typically does, sometimes requiring a slower, more deliberate pass or two through the trickiest sections to avoid bogging the machine down mid-stump. Neither of these two species is as slow-going as locust or a genuinely old oak stump, but neither one grinds as fast or as easily as a young silver maple or poplar stump would either, so we price them somewhere in the middle of the range. Homeowners rarely know offhand which of the two they've got standing in the yard, and that's fine - a quick look at the bark pattern or the leaf shape on any nearby suckers usually settles it for us in a few seconds once we're on site.
How that changes the price
When you tell us what kind of tree it was on the phone before we ever come out, we're not just making conversation before getting to the real numbers you actually care about - species genuinely changes how long a stump of a given size takes to grind through and how much wear it puts on our equipment over the course of a single job. If you're not entirely sure what it was, a photo of the bark, any leaves still hanging on nearby root suckers, or even just a close-up of the stump's grain pattern once it's been cut usually gives us enough to work with and price the job accurately before we ever load the trailer and head toward your address. It also helps us bring the right machine the first time, rather than showing up with equipment better suited to a soft maple stump and discovering halfway through that we're actually working through dense black locust that needs a slower, more patient pass.
